How Tech Changed Grocery Shopping
Posted: Sep 06, 2021 | Reading Time: 2 Minutes
In recent months, and brought to a head due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our shopping habits have changed, especially when it comes to getting our groceries.
Many of us have begun to order groceries online to either pick up or to be delivered directly to our homes through third-party delivery services such as Instacart. Not only is this new habit changing how we personally shop, but it’s also changed how grocery stores look and how they are physically laid out.
Before the COVID pandemic, grocery stores had never been a very tech-advanced retail industry, but according to McKinsey global management consulting, the adoption of online grocery shopping was propelled 10 years into the future in the span of three months. Some grocery stores are downsizing to designate more space towards online fulfillment, while some have redesigned their floor plans to enable their stores to work as both fulfillment centers and regular stores for consumers.
Grocery retailers had to quickly shift their focus to online ordering, and many had to begin investing in in-store pickup options. While grocery stores have seen benefits through this newfound digital adoption, research has also shown that consumers will continue to use online grocery shopping options for the foreseeable future, with 70 to 90 percent of citizens in most countries set to continue their newfound online shopping behaviors.
The future of grocery store shopping will most likely become even more innovated, with new in-store technology such as digital shelves that provide real-time information on products such as ratings and reviews, promotions, or personalized recommendations. Grocery store apps may begin giving mobile notifications to help streamline purchasing decisions for customers. Overall, the introduction of online grocery shopping has forced the grocery store landscape to adapt practically overnight, with new tech and customer experiences on the horizon.
